Fabian Fernandez-Han rings the Bell to celebrate winning the NYSE Financial Future Challenge.

When thinking of ways to encourage financial literacy in America’s youth, NYSE Euronext (NYX), K12 Inc. (LRN) and By Kids for Kids Co. reached out to some experts: kids. The NYSE Foundation partnered with online education provider K12 and marketing and media-relations firm By Kids for Kids to sponsor the NYSE Financial Future Challenge, a national competition that asks kids to come up with ways to teach personal finance and investing to their peers.

“K12 was proud to partner on the NYSE Financial Future Challenge,” says Ron Packard, founder and CEO of K12. “This competition encourages the qualities that will equip today’s young people to be tomorrow’s leaders.”

The winner, 12-year-old Fabian Fernandez-Han, invented an iPhone/iPod Touch application, called Oink-a-Saurus, that creates a scenario of what could be gained financially from investing in stocks rather than shopping. He celebrated the win by ringing The Closing Bell® and was awarded $2,500 to jump-start his investment portfolio. Says Packard: “Fabian is an excellent example of what young people can achieve through hard work and education.”
