Housed in a building at CareFusion’s San Diego headquarters is the Center for Safety and Clinical Excellence. Entering the center is like walking into a hospital: You’ll find a nurse’s stand, a pharmacy, operating rooms — everything but actual patients (though there is a lifelike dummy). The company says the center is a place where potential customers — hospital executives and practitioners from around the world —can see how CareFusion technologies function in a setting that closely matches the clinical work flow of a hospital. “If they’re here to see Pyxis, this gives them the opportunity to actually feel it, touch it, see how it and our other products work,” says Tim Vanderveen, a CareFusion vice president who works at the center.
For Jim Donnelly, chief nursing officer at Hamot Hospital in Erie, Pa., a visit served many purposes. Donnelly says it was a way to affirm that CareFusion’s mission and culture aligned with Hamot’s commitment to patient safety and quality, as well as a chance to review the development of existing and new technologies. “We participated in discussions about next-generation needs in patient safety from the acute-care provider’s perspective,” he says. “As long-standing customers, we felt it imperative to invest some time with the CareFusion leadership team.”
