CACI International Offers a New Start for Veterans

After a 14-year career in the U.S. Army, Shelia Hinds joined the staff of CACI International Inc. (CACI) in 2007 as a graphic designer. “I wanted to work for a company that understood that disability and inability didn’t mean the same thing,” says Hinds, who was injured in Iraq. “A program that allows veterans to advance their careers has meant more to me than words can possibly say.”
The Arlington, Va.-based provider of IT and professional services for defense-related federal agencies says that one of its core purposes is to help soldiers and sailors be successful on the battlefield — and this extends beyond the period when these men and women are active in the military. Deploying Talent, Creating Careers, a program first championed by CACI President and CEO Paul Cofoni, a U.S. Army veteran, helps provide disabled veterans with training and jobs. “Paul recognized that reemployment of disabled veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan was going to be a nationwide challenge, and he energized CACI to respond to this need,” says Larry Clifton, CACI’s senior vice president of recruiting and workforce planning, who heads the program.
Since the debut of Deploying Talent in April 2007, CACI has hired more than 550 veterans. It also assists the veterans — some of whom are still in the hospital at the time — with individual résumé assistance and helps them land internships. The company benefits from the alliance as well, CACI says, as it provides ready access to a morale-boosting pool of talented, motivated job candidates.
